- Australian Kirsty Sword wants to be a documentarian and travels to East Timor in 1990 just after it opens to tourists so that she can film human rights violations and the oppressive conditions under colonialism. But instead of only filming she becomes part of the Timorese resistance, acts as a courier for imprisoned guerrilla leader Xanana Gusmão, and transforms into the revolutionary leader Ruby Blade during the struggle for independence.
