In rural Colombia, Rosana (played by Luisa Huertas) and her pregnant daughter-in-law Hermelinda (played by Ana María Estupiñán) receive a letter from Hermelinda's husband, but they can't read it. They head to the nearest town to ask a literate person for help, they discover a massacre of all inhabitants, and then Hermelinda goes into labor.
