Esther Eng lived openly as a lesbian, was the first woman to direct a Chinese-language film in the United States, became a leading director in Hong Kong, and was one of the few women with Chinese ancestry working in film in the first half of the 20th century. Her life and work are contrasted with two contemporaries: director Dorothy Arzner and actress Anna May Wong.
