In 1958 Mildred Jeter (played by Ruth Negga) and Richard Loving (played by Joel Edgerton) travel to Washington, D.C., to wed because interracial marriage was still illegal in their home state of Virginia. They are arrested and move, and then passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act spurs Mildred to take legal action that leads them to the U.S. Supreme Court. - Director
