- Fred Martinez was a ńadleeh́i, a person with a female nature in a male body, who was bullied, harassed, and murdered in a hate crime at age 16 in 2001. His life is examined in the context of his Navajo culture—in which two-spirit individuals are traditionally revered—other indigenous views about gender and sexuality, and perspectives on gender that were introduced through Western cultures.
